Derek Hough: Awards & Honors

EMMY Awards

Derek won two EMMY awards for Outstanding Choreography in 2013 & 2015 and has received eight EMMY nominations in total for his work on the show Dancing With the Stars. Click the links for each year below for the full coverage.

  • 2013: The nomination that earned him the award in 2013 was including his choreographies for “Hey Pachuco“, “Para Los Rumberos” and “Walking on Air“.
  • 2015: In 2015, the choreography that gave him the win was “Elastic Heart” that he choreographed with his sister, Julianne, and Tessandra Chavez. All three shared the award, but they also shared it with Travis Wall, since there was a tie in the category.
  • 2016: Derek received his 8th nomination in total. The winners of the category were the Quest Crew and Kathryn Burns. [Creative ceremony] [Primetime ceremony]

Young Hollywood Awards

  • 2013: Derek was not nominated but he presented an award.
  • 2014: Derek was nominated in the categories “Hottest Body (of work)” and “Best Bromance” (shared with Mark Ballas). He won the first.

Industry Dance Awards

  • 2015: Derek was nominated for America’s Favorite Choreographer and America’s Favorite Performance for “Elastic Heart” along with Julianne and Tessandra! He went home with both awards.
  • 2016: Derek was nominated for Favorite Dance Idol and America’s Favorite Performance for “Footprints in the Sand”, “Grace Kelly” & “Cry Little Sister”. He won the first category.

World Choreography Awards

  • 2015: Derek and Christopher Scott were nominated and won in the “Television Live Performance” category.
  • 2016: Derek, Julianne and Tessandra Chavez were nominated in the “Television Reality Show/Competition” category

World of Dance Industry Awards

  • 2016: Derek, Julianne and Tessandra were nominated for “The Best Choreography on Television’ for Elastic Heart. There was no official post about the winners of the night. We know that Tessandra won that night, but she was also nominated with a solo routine. Officially, there is no announcement that it was the “Elastic Heart” performance that won but from different comments, seems like it did.
  • 2017: Derek was nominated twice in the category “Best Live Performance on Television” with Kairos performance (feat. Lindsey Sterling) that was presented on DWTS and alongside Julianne and NappyTabs for “Derek & Julianne Hough Live on GMA“. Derek won for KAIROS.

Honorary Awards

  • 2014
    1. Derek, along with his sister Julianne, were honored with the Kaleidoscope Award, an award that is given to people of the entertainment industry who bring light and laughter into the lives of children through their professional achievements and personal humanitarianism.
    2. GLSEN honored Derek with the Inspiration Award. In his acceptance speech he talked about bullying and he urged people “to create, not destroy…to believe, not doubt…to lead, not follow…to be forced for good and be kind to each other”.
  • 2016
    1. Dizzy Feet Foundation – Gala: Derek, along with Julianne, were honored with the Inspiration Award from the Dizzy Feet Foundation. Each year, the foundation celebrates the accomplishments of exemplary individuals and entities whose unique contributions have significantly impacted the world of dance.
    2. Television Industry Advocacy Awards: Derek is honored for his involvement with One Life at a Time and Sophie’s Place.
