Dancing with the Stars officially kicked off last night and the first dance is over! What a beautiful night of dancing that was!
Marilu and Derek were amazing! Be sure to check our post from last night to see their dance and other videos and pictures from the live show. Unfortunately there was an incidence too during the night and many media focus on that instead of dancing…glad that the situation was solved quickly and as you’ll see below, Derek played a big part on it! So proud to be Derek’s fan!
People has a nice write up about last night with parts of Derek’s interview talking about the incident. Here’s what Derek said but check out the article for more details and what others said about it: ““This is my home and I was just so shocked that people would come here and be so negative,” Hough, 31, exclusively tells PEOPLE. “This is a safe place for people to learn a new skill and seek redemption or start a new chapter in their life and that’s what Ryan is trying to do and I just felt so defensive that someone would try and ruin that for him and for everyone watching, so I took it upon myself to make sure they were escorted out. I wanted to protect my home.””
Marilu’s reaction to finding out Derek was her partner was as epic as an Oprah surprise from her talk show days. I could watch that intro package on a loop all damn day long. And can we talk about Marilu’s body? She’s the Marla Maples of this season, but with Derek by her side, she’ll hopefully last much longer (she also seems to have a much more energetic personality). While she’s no Jennifer Grey (Derek’s last partner over age 40 that he won the Mirrorball with), Marilu has the talent and skill to be this season’s dark horse.
The “Taxi” star has been wanting to be on DWTS for years. Not only did she finally get her chance, she got her dream partner, Derek Hough. The 64-year-old actress called herself a “geeked-out fan girl” when she met the six-time dancing champ. He was equally impressed with her abilities and work ethic. Their jive to “Can’t Stop Dancing” was called full on fabulous by Len, fantastic by Carrie Ann and quick and sharp by Julianne.
Not too shabby, Marilu! She reacted to Derek just as we would probably react if Derek were our DWTS partner, and then she killed it as much as she could for the first dance. This is absolutely a pair to watch.
America’s Dad Tom Bergeron puts it perfectly (doesn’t he always?): The great Hough drought is over. Not only is Julianne back as the fourth judge on the panel, but Derek has returned. The guy couldn’t stay away, and we’re all the better for it. Derek will be filling the Ballas-shaped hole in my heart this season. Most excited about this news, though, is his partner Marilu Henner. She’s president of the Derek Hough Fan Club. Who knew? As all the judges point out, dancing first and dancing the jive is a tall order, but that doesn’t bother Marilu too much. She’s stiff in her upper body, but overall it’s a fun, sparkly routine to kick off the evening.
“While most of the crowd shouted in support of Lochte, Derek Hough rushed in from backstage in an attempt to quell the protesters who yelled “liar” to the swimmer. “You need to get your negativity out of here,” he shouted at the group of men and women.”
After the live show, dancing pro Derek Hough took to his Snapchat to share his thoughts on the night’s unexpected events.
“That little incident that happened with Ryan — the people out there are cowards and absolutely foolish,” he said. “Dancing is a positive place. It’s a loving place. This is our home. You don’t bring that into or home. It’s just unacceptable … None of us are perfect. We all make mistakes. We need to forgive each other.”
A row of women wearing the same anti-Lochte shirts were booing the swimmer as this happened, prompting dance pro Derek Hough to run out from backstage and yell at the women. Security removed these women as well.
